W Tree

W Tree is a small vibrant community of about 85 people in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains in East Gippsland, Victoria, 80 km from Lakes Entrance and 20 kms north of Buchan.

Story has it that in the 1800's, the stockmen who used to travel from Gelantipy, Black Mountain and the Monaro Plains with their cattle to go to market in Bairnsdale used to meet under the tree that looked like a W.  Hence the name, W Tree. There are several stories about where the actual tree was located: apparently it was destroyed by lightning in the late 1800's. The Crown Reserve in the centre of W Tree is where their cattle used to rest overnight - this is still in existance, now called Detarka Reserve.

W Tree is the home of two ecovillages , one Tibetan Buddhist center , a number of different ecosensitive businesses and very creative & entreprenurial people .
